  • so, frequently people will conflate monkeys and apes, and use the terms interchangably (that’s the left end of the graph), people with a bit more knowledge may be aware of the common definition that monkeys have tails while apes do not (that’s the middle part), while those with more knowledge of biological taxonomy argue that, since new world monkeys and old world monkeys share a more distant common ancestor than old world monkeys and apes, if we want to define a term ‘monkey’ that encompasses both new and old world monkeys, it would have to also include all apes (including humans). so, according to the right side of the graph people, chimpanzees are apes are monkeys (though lots of monkeys are not apes, it’s a squares and rectangles kinda thing).

  • trying to start any kind of art as an adult sucks because inevitably by that point, you’ve got a fair head start on your art appreciation skill, which makes you perceive your initial attempts at art creation as particularly heinous. if you start as a kid, you’re less capable of recognizing how bad you are, and you aren’t having to compare yourself against peers who’ve got twenty years of experience on you.

  • definitely the Tubbs Fire. You can see where my childhood home used to be in the wikipedia image! Fortunately, we didn’t live there at the time, we were a couple neighborhoods over, but it was still quite scary, the air was horrible, it lasted forever, and we had to evacuate for a while to my grandma’s house to the south. Fortunately the worst of the damage to our home was holes melted in the fake grass from raining embers, and a persistent smell of smoke, and nobody i knew got hurt.

someday, i want to live somewhere that doesn’t have to worry about ‘fire season’.
