Hamas is a terrorist group that has made it very clear its objective is the destruction of Israel, stop pretending they’re good guys who will stop once Israel stops.

If they’d just call for an equal and just peace none of this would happen.

That’s ridiculously naive. Hamas has been attacking Israel for a very long time and they’re not going to stop simply because Israel agrees to a ceasefire.

Or stop giving Israel weapons. That’d solve the qhole thing.

No, it wouldn’t, because Hamas would just re-arm and commit another Oct. 7th at an opportune point in the future.

Only people who don’t know their history think that. Arabs in that region have been calling for the destruction of Israel since its inception.

Oh, no, he definitely knows he did something wrong. He just knows that if he pushes hard enough, there’s a chance he can get away with it. Trump is a psychopath who knows that rules are only as powerful as their enforcement, and he’s been weaseling his way by them his whole life.

It was and it wasn’t. It was a brilliant move, but Israel also obviously knew there would be innocent bystanders. Overall though, given the amount of damage it did to Hezbollah, I’d say you’d be hard pressed to give Israel a better attack option.

As much as most people in the Middle East would like that, I don’t think it’s likely to happen. Netanyahu needs this to keep going to stay out of jail and realistically, letting Hamas and Hezbollah reconstitute themselves just gives them time to execute more terrorist attacks, which Israelis have every right to be against.

I don’t see this war getting cleaned up neatly anytime soon. The only way I can see it happening is if the U.S. steps in to militarily enforce a two-state solution with a DMZ, which they never will (and for good reason; that would be its own clusterfuck).

I think this is it, actually. Having a lot of money can lead to spending it on frivolous things, but I don’t think that’s what we mean by corruption. It’s when you have so much money that you can use that money to influence people in power that it gets bad. Suddenly, when getting your way is merely a question of bribery and you have plenty of means to do it, people start thinking they have a right to pull the strings in the way they see fit.

The gun is popular with criminals for the same reason it’s popular overall. Oh noes.

As usual, the gun isn’t the problem. Gun laws allowing access to it by criminals are.

It is not. You need to re-familiarize yourself with what monarchy actually is. Maybe spend a year in an actual monarchy/dictatorship country if you have so little appreciation for the democracy you currently enjoy?

I’d like an explanation of what you actually mean by this and why not voting is better than voting for the least bad candidate, if you regard them all as bad.

The cruelty is the point. The evidence is clear.

I actually disagree that the cruelty is intentional. I think conservatives have proven pretty clearly at this point that they devote a considerable amount of mental effort to believing their views are correct, no matter what the data show. I think they genuinely think transsexuality is a farce, just like they believe homosexuality is a mental illness, and that they’re protecting children from bad influences by preventing them from transitioning. The problem is willful ignorance and lack of appreciation for critical thinking.

There’s a difference between protest and harassment. I strongly believe the right to express all opinions–even stupid, bigoted ones–should be protected, but that doesn’t mean you get to harass other people and try to intimidate them into submission.

Don’t use California as a metric for American homelessness. California has made itself a veritable Mecca for homeless people by passing laws that allow them to set up camp virtually anywhere. Those laws, combined with its naturally temperate climate have resulted in 30% of America’s homeless population living in California. No other state in the U.S. has such a hard-on for homeless people and we have much more sensible laws that reflect that.

It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if Lemmy is rife with these trolls. And I’m not just talking about the tankies.

I will never understand people who advocate for communism as opposed to democratic socialism. Every major country that has ever gone down the communist road has ended up a dictatorship. That’s not a bug of communism, it’s a feature. I get the criticism of capitalism, I really do, but we can enact socialist laws that rein in the excesses and extremes of capitalism without sacrificing our democracies for one-party governments.
