No personal experience here at all, but to anyone who finds this fascinating/crazy, I absolutely recommend a read of “Sing Backwards & Weep” by Mark Lanegan. It’s a personal account of his struggles as an addict while being the lead singer of “Screaming Trees” during the late 80s - 90s “grunge” era. He doesn’t hold back at all. Couldn’t put it down.
Totally agree with this. That being said, it also seems a bit hypocritical…
That’s probably it - I’ve only browsed All once or twice when I’ve run out of new Subscribed posts…I must be missing the drama from other random communities.
Makes sense - appreciate the response! Regarding your last point, one look at my comment history shows I’m clearly not a troll, but totally get it…I just keep seeing all these posts/comments hating on .ml and having not seen anything myself, it makes me wonder if I’m missing something or if I should think about even switching instances…
Can someone please explain all the .ml hate? From what I’ve seen, it’s mostly a tech (i.e., not tank!) instance and I haven’t experienced any drama at all aside from other instances hating on us. It seems WAY too overblown and generalized from my experience. If the OP blocked .ml are they even able to see my response here?
I leave them. I’ve even dialed the super close ones a couple of times over the years on purpose just to (anxiously) see if their numbers have been taken 😅
Tom from MySpace really is the nicest guy on this list…he was my first friend on there! 😎
This girl is also temporarily homeless, which is why she was so tired. Adds a whole extra level to this…
Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2…the exploration of the wilds while so vulnerable in the first game is something I’ll never get bored of while the second game just takes it to a whole other level with your power growing so immense. They still totally hold up with the extended editions!
Totally agree, it’s wild, just wanted to give some perspective from the other side 😊
After all that school, I hear you 😅. But physicians in Canada, for instance, make substantially less than our friends to the south…for some specialties, even getting to $200,000 doesn’t mean much when you have so much debt, fees, and other business costs. It makes a difference given the huge need for physicians all around…such a sacrifice on so many levels with little payoff untill so much later. Couldn’t imagine the impact a donation like this would have anywhere, let alone Canada.
I get the hate, but as someone with some experience here, the amount of debt from a normal BA/BSc is miniscule compared to med school…like doesn’t even come remotely close. The amount of time spent paying that back for someone that doesn’t come from wealth is sometimes longer than they live…
I’m on Lemmy.ml and am anything but a “tankie”. Love it here. Tonnes of tech/varied posts in my main subscribed feed and I’ve never noticed anything other than a minimal dose of drama…Facebook or Reddit are much more toxic in comparison which is part of the reason I left those places.

I just wiped Windows from my drive yesterday and committed to Fedora after dualbooting for 15 years…I’ve been maining Fedora for a while and always kept Windows around “just in case”, but never actually seemed to need it. This recall/AI spyware was it for me though. Gaming has been a breeze for a while on Fedora/Linux due to Steam/Proton…such a great feeling to finally be completely rid of Windows!
Voyager: S3, Ep. 23, “Distant Origin” is one of my absolute favs. It follows the team’s interactions with a not-so-alien race and the friction in their culture between science/academia and religion. I love Voyager overall, but this episode had me on the edge of my seat.
The Ontario government has had a few initiatives to push smart thermostats and my area just had our water meters upgraded to smart ones. I know nothing about the water meters, but I block the Google telemetry from my Nest Thermostat (unrelated to the gov’t program) via my pi-hole at least. By definition, if you sign on to the Enbridge thermostat initiative you are agreeing to send your usage. Not really sure of the impacts of this article on Canada, but pretty chilling nonetheless!
There are other privacy-respecting trackers that could be used for app improvement. At the end of the day, Google profits from the data collected here, and Lemmy has a big community of users looking to avoid this. Tangentially, Google also has massive contracts with the Israeli military that have recently come under fire in the news…just another reason to use different app-improvement trackers if the goal is to truly boycott/divest, etc.
Oh wow, that was quick! Yeah I couldn’t believe it when I heard he passed away…even after all of that, it was such a shock. Glad you enjoyed it!
