what are your thoughts on browsing the “All” feed ? especially your thoughts on what should be marked nsfw and what should not

I have a lot of thoughts about this, but I am curious about how other users feel :)

I think “nsfw” in itself is a good description - “not safe for work”. I would be embarrassed or reprimanded at work if I scrolled past pictures of gore, extreme violence, nudity, or sexually suggestive anime girls, so those should be marked nsfw.

There are two problems with that: First, what is acceptable or not is a cultural thing and varies from country to country. There are actually countries where anything depicting humans or mentioning women is NSFW. In other countries they wonder “why has this been marked NSFW? They don’t even f_ck!”.

Second, even with atking this into account, and if we concentrate on an American and European context which has mostly comparable ideas of morality, people still mark things as NSFW where I ask “Why?”, and other posts are not marked NSFW where I also ask “Why?” - if you understand what I mean.

So any usage of an NSFW tag has a certain ambuguity to it, and can only seen as a hint, as a personal thing to use or not use as the poster evaluates it.

Well, they could expand tags beyond simply NSFW. A clear example would be “nudity” vs something like “violence”, but could be more specific like “nudity” vs “sexual” or “pornographic”

I’d imagine that images of nude people in sexually suggestive positions are not safe for work in most jobs in most countries…

Using separate tags for “LEWD” vs “GORE” Has been a request on Reddit since practically day 1.

The fediverse is an evolution from things like Reddit, so I’m a bit surprised this wasn’t a day-1 feature here and that we’re still having the exact same conversation.

Community-provided custom tags would be a nice feature too. There’s some artsy content that toes the line, but even if it’s like some really cool body paint, or a tattoo or something, I still don’t want surprise tits on my screen in the middle of the break room. That would be a nice way to one-click block the 700 or so furry porn communities on Lemmy.

…or block the 700 or so sports communities if you’re not interested in sports; this isn’t necessarily just a blood vs boobs problem as it is a content (of any kind) filtering problem.

i want all to be literally all. but i also want the ability to block some things everywhere. I enjoy many of the nsfw posts, but have blocked way too many anime style nsfw.

For me it’s very simple: NSFW can’t have a general acceptable definition because it depends on culture, background and personal beliefs. There is no way for a collection of communities to have a common definition and even if they would have: enforcement and interpretation is still done by volunteers.

Therefore All is never safe for work unless I know that my tolerance is lower than all communities within lemmy AND I’m fine with an accidental penis or breast due to human error.

NSFW also depends on where you work.

A corporate office, a bar, a strip club, an adult toy store, and a military base are all going to have wildly different definitions of “NSFW”

I a world where the wildest conspiracy theories and openly talking about killing political opponents are considered sfw but a topless woman is not, I couldn’t care less.

I think perhaps it would be nice with custom tags.

I would like to block all content of sexual nature (sexual nudity, lewd anime, the like)

it is very subjective what is nsfw and what is not. For some people, making porn is their work, so obviously porn is not nsfw for them.

If we had custom tags, we would have the hassle of having the same thing in a lot of different categories, but I would much prefer that to having only the nsfw option which is just not enough to capture the diversity of content (and badly named).

then I could block all the porn tags (or perhaps block a user driven list of porn tags) and avoid a lot more “porn” than I do now 😅

What counts as NSFW outside of actual nudity is very subjective. the Moe communities no doubt have this issue.

I use All exclusively and have NSFW content disabled. Just wish there was a way to disable political, news, and regional communities.

If I see something I think should be marked NSFW I report it. I let the relevant mods/admins decide if it should be or not.
